Although NEA is often not a fan of cyber schools (and we understand the problems inherent to them), the reality is that some of our members will -- and have -- been hired by cyber schools. Further, some school districts create their own on-line schools for students so that the district does  not need to pay out money for students who cannot attend school. To that end, Sean Snowden, the ‎9-12 Academy Principal at ‎Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School in Beaver, Pennsylvania, provided a workshop on teaching on-line and the various cyber school situations that exist.

Dr. Kenneth Williams, Assistant Superintendent of Mount Pleasant School District and Adjunct Professor at Pitt-Greensburg, hand-picked four gifted students (two male/two female, one from each grade 9-12) to present as a panel on Gifted Education. Our members asked questions about classwork, extra curricular, personal goals, and social situations in order to gain greater insight into what gifted students want, need, and struggle with within school.

Pitt-Greensburg has a partnership with Southmoreland School District,   Hempfield Area School District, Mount Pleasant Area School District,  and Yough School District. Within this partnership, speakers are brought to our campus for the benefit of teachers and parents from those districts along with our SPSEA members.

During the fall SPSEA Executive Board Meeting,  Dr. Chris Clayton, SPSEA Guru Extraordinaire, pushed every region to have a conference. The Southwest Region accepted this challenge and the Teacher Leadership Institute was born. In addition to the Southwest Region being invited, high school students interested in becoming teachers were also invited at a discounted price.

Although a regional event, it was held at Pitt-Greensburg with Pitt-Greensburg students making up the majority of people on the planning committee. This March 24 event hosted 43 students, including 29 from Pitt-Greensburg.

New Teacher Panel

Participating Members:

Last April, after the conference, we invited back two prior SPSEA members Dave Postlethwait, a secondary mathematics teacher in Virginia, and Tori Popovich, an elementary teacher in Virginia, both of whom began teaching in Virginia at the beginning of 2017. They shared their experiences as new teachers in the classroom and their experiences as transplants in Virginia. They answered tons of questions and showed our members how incredible our opportunities are compared to other preservice teachers around the country. It was a really eye-opening and interesting workshop!

American Education week

During American Education week, our SPSEA students thank our professors throughout the university for educating us! This year, each professor received a highlighter and candy -- and a note thanking for them "highlighting" our day. These tokens of appreciation were put into the mailboxes of every full-time professor, remind us that we need to be thankful for our teachers, too!
